Human and environment

Researches of environmental pollution impact on humans are very intensive lately. From the results of many researches of soil, air, plant and animal pollution it was shown than human with their activity affect the environment in a great extent. Also at ERICo Velenje many of the major pollutants were investigated, namely heavy metal pollution assessment, including trace elements (lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic etc.), highly volatile hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. All these pollutants can have a direct or an indirect impact on human and their health. The pollutant can act as a trigger (promoter) of a certain disease or can (in a combination with some other factor) cause various diseases.

The impact of pollution on human and their health are carried out at ERICo Institute since its establishment. The research on the influence of working environment to the health of workers is one of the first. Later on, the research of the industrial pollution on the human health in the Šalek Valley was carried out, following by the comparative study of the environmental pollution in the Upper Meža Valley between years 1989 and 2001 (the segment “human” was carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Public Health Celje and Ravne na Koroškem). After the year 2002 the following researches were done: Hair as a bioindicator of environmental pollution; Teeth as a bioindicator of environmental pollution; The comparison of cancer incidence between the Šalek Valley and other regions in Slovenia; Human exposure to air pollutants in the Šalek Valley.
